Unburnt - Arcane Evolution - (8.5/10)
Published on September 3, 2019
Coming from Canada, Unburnt is a new blackened death metal act, started by already experienced people. Guitarist Bo Louther and drummer Joe Mullen from the established Canadian death metal band Odium have started this project, so despite being a debut, there is a lot of experience and quality in this music. The band released a single titled “Harnessing Black Flame” in 2016 and now they’re back with a quick and compact 14 minute EP titled “Arcane Evolution”.
At the core, this is old school fast paced death metal combined with a more forward thinking technical style. There’s also a strong black metal influence that translates well into constant blasts and some flat riffs, which is a cool alternation to the groovy head banging death metal stuff. What’s genuinely and positively surprising is the crisp sound mixing of the EP. This is not typical to old school death metal nor to black metal, but it actually really fits the music in this case.
The guys have a straightforward way of getting down to business. Packing 4 songs in 14 minutes doesn’t leave a a single second to fuck around, so that means all the heavy riffs and solos are put together tightly and the songs hack away at your ears in record time. The speed of the drumming is one particular impressive aspect. The guitar solos are a good balancing item to add some melody and a very welcome asset. I must also give a special shout out to the groovy bridge and outro riffs in “Sorrow-Bearing Enemy”. And for last, the vocals are definitely decent and well suited for the genre, with a cool twist in a very mechanical sounding verse on the title track. That’s it. By the time you’ve read this you probably would have already listened to a full song so why don’t you check that out instead! Arcane Evolution is available now on the band’s Bandcamp page.
