MEKONG DELTA definitely were the godfathers of Techno-Thrash besides WATCHTOWER. Moreover the line-up of this “project” has initially been one of the best kept secrets ever in the entire history of Metal. Now we all know who stood behind this pseudonym and this were the following names at the legendary debut: Björn Eklund (aka Ralph Hubert) on the bass, Gordon Perkins (aka Jörg Michael) on the drums, Rolf Stein (aka Frank Fricke) on the guitar, Vincent St.Johns (aka Reiner Kelch) on the guitar and Keil (aka Wolfgang Borgmann) on the microphone.
This line-up played on the self-titled debut-album, which was produced by Ralph Hubert, the boss of the Arrgh-Label. What came out, is a unique mixture of raging Speed Metal, Classics, Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock. Even with the vox it’s a special venture, as Keil sounds rather psychotic and strung-up than technical unassailable. But this fits perfectly to the extraordinary musical journey, on which the band invites us. Songs like “The Hut Of Baba Yaga” are clearly an adaptation from “Bilder Einer Ausstellung” by Modest Mussorgsky. What has been ‘rocked out’ in the 70es through EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER, now gets hard guitars by MEKONG DELTA. That they would revise the entire piece like ELP, could nobody guess in those days. Fucking impressive in every case.
Or you might take the song “Black Sabbath”, whose lyrics are just consisting of lined up strings in a row by BLACK SABBATH. “Shiva’s Return” copes with Hinduism. The dragging “Heroes Grief” is based on “The Bane Of The Black Sword” by Moorcock’s Elric of Melnibone-Sag. Of course they do and did stand out lyrically of the sameness and they do it musically in any case. But who can handle with more complex bands like CORONER, WATCHTOWER or LIVING DEATH, might look forward to this masterpiece. My musical world of that time has been pretty confused through this album.
