The combination of classical music and Heavy Metal is an endeavour that has been screwed up many times. Other than THERION only few really managed to create something truly exciting. DOL AMMAD also is a try to unite these two sides.
It has turned out to be a very interesting album, which also needs patience and concentration. The head behind the whole thing is Greek Thanasis Lightbridge, who has added his fondness of spacy synthesizer sounds a la TANGERINE DREAM. So they combine a lot of different influences and they are very keen on variety. But what really hits a wrong note here is the sterile drum sound. With a world class drummer such as Alex Holzwarth (SIEGES EVEN/RHAPSODY OF FIRE) I had expected more. That the synthesizers also are louder than the guitars is also a bit disturbing, is that still Metal? Am I allowed to like this?
To be honest, yes and no, because towards the end the whole thing runs out of steam and this opulent, really greatly arranged 14-head choir also is a little much over the course of the whole album. Then I will need something simple such as VENOM or MOTÖRHEAD and everything is good. Yet still, this is a demanding, perfectly made experience, despite no surprises.
