I do, I do very much indeed love the French Metal scene. France is home to basically every Black Metal band worth paying attention to, some seemingly good Thrash, and some great Death Metal, matter of fact one of my more favored Death Metal acts YYRKOON hails from the French hillsides. But as much as I’d love to do an article on the French (Black) Metal scene, this is a review about AGRESSOR and the new album “Deathreat”.
AGRESSOR play Death Metal mixed with thrash elements, think BOLT THROWER, and ANAL VOMIT mixed with some older SLAYER. That’s about the right sound, and save some insane blasting, the sound is pretty much a slower groove plodding pummel. Is it heavy? Yes, it is fairly heavy. AGRESSOR has this extremely tight production that has a great guitar sound, really thick, and the bass packs a wallop, like a smack in the face. The vocals are never changing, simply staying the classic Death Metal growl, a lot like “Covenant” era MORBID ANGEL.
There are some really good riffs to found on this album, pretty technical and fairly catchy. Take for example the really good “Warrior Heart” which has this killer riff and some really groove stomping drumming and rhythm guitar. This track is some real headbanging stuff to say the least. Another standout track would be the great cover of the HELLHAMMER classic “Agressor” damn, it’s just good to hear it really.
What’s odd is that AGRESSOR has been around for 20 years and I’ve never even heard of them before, or maybe I have and just didn’t know. The Fact of the matter is that AGRESSOR has made a fairly solid album that for the most part stays on its own two feet. But there are a handful of songs that just fall short, but this album is still a fine slab of headbanging goodness.
