The Death Metal band WAYD was founded on 1994 in Slovakia and already recorded their first demo "Shape Of Your Mind" one year later. Two years after, they released their first longplayer "The Ultimate Passion" which contained also keyboards and female vocals. On their actual piece of work, "Barriers", a big progressive part was added.
Parts of frilly Jazz build the contrast to broad Death/Thrash riffing. They also don't back off from including saxophone passages which sounds quite funny. You see, WAYD are no good for the show-off-Metalhead who moshes like crazy and starts to scream by only hearing the word "complex". They are however, not as sick as you could presume for Power is still very important with them. I thought PESTILLANCE "Spheres" or ATHEIST "Unquestionable Presence" were more stressing.
Okay, the class of the latter is not really reached yet here. It is technically admirable what the quartet is doing but still it's stuff for the freaks. Something for those who also like ATHEIST, DARK MILLENIUM, CYNIC or THEORY IN PRACTICE. Generally a delight for those who pay attention to technical advance and varying songwriting.
I actually like it 'cause WAYD always stay true and clear. No song is outstanding, the level always quite similar! (Online September 26, 2002)
