It was a really noble deed by I Hate Records to re-release the early works of PROTECTOR. Only this way the maniac has the first opportunity to welcome the “Misanthropy” EP on CD, they even added the 1986 two-track demo and re-mastered the whole shebang on top of it. And the original pressing of “Golem” had been long out of print for a long time now. Add to this a thick booklet with all lyrics, history and photos, Thrasher heart, what can you hope for more?
Musically PROTECTOR had been sitting between the chairs somewhere between Thrash and Death Metal, just imagine a prehistoric version of what MALEVOLENT CREATION are doing these days and you have a rough idea how important PROTECTOR had been for the evolution of some of the by now biggest Death Metal commandos.
The songs were primitive, but who cares, if everything is so mercilessly attacking your brain and cause a big ballyhoo? And PROTECTOR didn’t just rely on pure speed, but add several mid-tempo parts and some Doomy elements for higher memorability! For best effect, listen to the song “Golem”.
And didn’t the boys have skull splitting riffs, holy cheap shit, how great!!! Fear-inducing vocals, murderous brutality, tons of energy at all corners and here and there even a little melody. Thrash heart, what more do you want? But we already had that. Just listen to the killer “Holy Inquisition” and you’ll know have I still proudly display my PROTECTOR patch. Fans of BULLDOZER over DISMEMBER all the way to DARKTHRONE should have this.
