Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge

Scottish Pirate Metal! You couldn’t make that up in a million years but here it is in all its rigging, rum induced tales, curses, wooden legs and plank walking indisputable glory.

Now besides the mighty RUNNING WILD, Metal hasn’t exactly been hoisting the main sail over itself to envelope the Pirate theme but with cutlass at the ready; a heady brew of mead and a tavern wench or two in tow, ALESTROM is determined to put a bit of fun and cajoling into the oft serious masculine world of Heavy Metal.

Based on the story of Welsh buccaneer and keen pirate Sir Admiral Henry Morgan, ‘’Captain Morgan’s Revenge’’  (there’s a bit of history to be read into for those keen enough) sees ALESTORM eschew all the mandatory requirements of a fairly standard Power Metal band crossed with a healthy dollop of Folk tinged melody. Indeed accurate comparisons can and will be made to KORPIKLAANI, TURISAS, ENSIFERUM and even the mad FINNTROLL. There are plenty of rampant riffs coupled with pummelling drums and insanely beguiling choruses.

There’s not a political stance or a take on world ills to be found and with such dumb-ass song titles like ‘’Nancy The Tavern Wench’’ and ‘’Death Before The Mast’’, anything less than tongue-in-cheek high seas banter would be rebuked as folly. What ALESTROM do give is an impressive debut with plenty of vigour, sweat, perspiration and an ear for a damn catchy tune.

They might be playing to a very niche market (as with the likes of 3 INCHES OF BLOOD and CONQUEST OF STEEL) however tracks like the effervescent ‘’The Huntmaster’’, the brash Thrash of ‘’Death Before The Mast’’, or the head nodding rampage of ‘’Set Sail And Conquer’’ are ostensibly bold if not overwhelmingly classic Heavy Metal. I just know for a fact that in Germany this lot will go down a storm and Scandinavian fans will embrace them like long lost brothers. It remains to be seen just how the rest of the world will receive them but for the now ALESTORM remain Scotland’s finest Pirate Metal export.

Catch them at a port near you soon.
