Stormwarrior - Heading Northe

If you put a Viking warship on the cover, spell Northe with an e and call your band STORMWARRIOR the chance of recognition outside the much lambasted world of Euro Power Metal is as likely as a decent headliner at this years Download Festival (perhaps KISS aside if you want to be picky).

So there you go. The majority have already given up leaving us, the true holders of the Metal spirit resplendent with a record so enriched with the fundamentals of Heavy Metal that it could charge a nuclear power station.

My humble abode might be constructed of bricks and mortar and live miles from the sea but I can taste the salt on my lips, the wind in my hair (the lamentation of the women, occasionally) and peril on the high seas just after one spin of this ridiculous imperious record.

So imbued with Heavy Metal spirit is ‘’Heading Northe’’ it’s overwhelming and renders the likes of HAMMERFALL and MANOWAR near redundant. STORMWARRIOR’s music may seem as olde as the ships they sail in but the HELLOWEEN/RUNNING WILD/GAMMA RAY tectonic, rampaging riffing, soaring choruses and widdly solos are exactly what you either love or hate about Power Metal. This record surely must be a wake up call to the so-called giants of the genre who have become lurching beasts, bulking up on fame and false praise. Whereas STORMWARRIOR cut a huge swathe of class and quality through heavily charted, polluted Metal waters their robust, frequently invigorating Power Metal marks them leagues above others.

There’s bombast aplenty and not to little excellent song writing with ‘’The Revenge Of Asa Lande’’ and the title track being a particular epic highlights. The whole Viking mythology slant must be taken with a pinch of coarse or fine sea salt, but after all what do Power Metal bands really have to sing about? However this is a charging rallying battle call to arms for those of us keen to extol the memories of the halcyon days of the 1980’s minus of course the spandex and mullets.
