What is up with Death Metal from the Netherlands this year? First, HAIL OF BULLETS releases a bulldozer of an album, and now, THE MONOLITH DEATHCULT which is nothing short of crushing in terms of sheer heaviness.
It is odd that one of the heaviest albums of the year starts off with a soothing keyboard line and chanting vocals, but once the guitars kick in and the album picks up, it turns into this bastard combination of PESTILENCE and VADER, with orchestrated keyboard parts and Techno samples that are seamlessly integrated into THE MONOLITH DEATHCULTís sound, which add to the sheer brutality of the album.
The resultant potent mixture sounds utterly monolithic. Itís made even heavier due to the incorporation of orchestral elements and Electronic samples, and the vocal delivery, be it as Death growling or orchestral chants. The non-Metal elements give the album a war like atmosphere, and those vocals sound like the bloodthirsty cries of a feral horde, or the diatribe of a very twisted and charismatic leader brainwashing his subjects to go do his bidding.
The riffs are very typical of old school Death Metal, with downpicked power chord chug patterns mixed in with tremolo picked riffs, but the music itself is so violent, visceral and evil it just stands out and grabs you. Right by the throat. Then it bashes your head against the closest wall. Then throws you down the stairs and drags you out to the sidewalk and curb stomps you. Then, just for good measure, it throws your body into the middle of the street and runs you over with a steamroller.
Why canít all my Death Metal be this heavy?
