Calling Vancouverís GROSS MISCONDUCT a good band would be a gross understatement. This band beautifully amalgamates standard Thrash Metal riffing with more complex, mid-period DEATH style riffing. Interjected between these elements are more melodic leads and blistering and brief guitar solos. What GROSS MISCONDUCT manages to do so well is inject a sense of melody into their otherwise bombastic and technical riffs. Aside from a few intermittent moments of straightforward Thrash Metal, each guitar riff is broken down and expanded to its fullest potential. This band has more than just a common grasp on how to write intelligent and challenging Metal, but they donít shy away from incorporating a little oldschool flavour either. The technical nature of these songs combined with the song lengths, most of which are at least longer than three and a half minutes, allows the band to explore any musical idea that they may have had.
The drum work is also outstanding. An expansive amount of drum techniques are utilized throughout "The Process Of Indoctrination". The drummer breaths just as much life into these songs as the guitarists do, and he does it through the use of elaborate fills. Every facet of the drum set is used to its limit; and the drummer doesnít shy away from allowing his technical chops to be the centre of attention more than a few times. The vocal work is raspy, often raw and ugly. The vocalist clearly had a lot to say, and he portrays a believable sense of anger. There are moments where he has a proto-Death Metal bite to his voice and other moments where he sounds closer to Phil Anselmo. Either way, he sounds consistently pissed off.
Iím very interested to see what this band has in store for us next. This is an extremely competent debut album, and it sends its message across without fancy production frills. This is a great, Death-Thrash hybrid album, and it is perfect for fans of the two genres.
