Austrian Death Machine - Total Brutal

AUSTRIAN DEATH MACHINE is the side project of AS I LAY DYING axeman Tim Lambesis, and by looking at the song titles and album cover, you’d be right to assume this is basically a joke band deal with all things Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Now, the music is pretty simple, straightforward, accessible and catchy. Calling it “Metalcore” is probably the best description, because of the simple heavy melodic riffs, occasional breakdowns, very mainstream song structures (verse-chorus-verse-chorus-interlude-verse-chorus) and that mid-range growl that most of the bands in the genre adopt, but doing so would probably a lot of people off to the record. The riffs are pretty well written, the Arnold impersonation is well done, even though I’ve heard 135125151325125 people do it, and the music in general is pretty catchy, if not unoriginal.

Normally, I would view the simplicity and the very shallow music on the album as a detriment, and rate it down accordingly. But….as the ridiculous song titles, most of them famous Schwarzenegger lines, the album cover and the silly interludes indicate, this is a joke band, meant to be humourous. Making it complex and layered would take away from its direct impact, and would be at the detriment of lighthearted and silly subject matter.

It’s simple, accessible Heavy Metal that deals with Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, simple because Arnold is “the embodiment of everything brutal and stereotypically Metal”. It’s not the best album of the year, nor was it meant to be. It’s meant to be fun listen!

Perfect album to sit around and get drunk to.
