I was shocked to see that SONIC SYNDICATE already had a new album out. I mean the band only released their second album “Only Inhuman” a little over a year ago and already they have their third one out (second for their latest label Nuclear Blast). But after listening to “Love And Other Disasters” it makes sense why it would have come out so soon. It’s the same album.
Alright, it’s not the same album, but it certainly sounds that way. After the massive change in sound and style from their first to second album this does come as quite a shock. The Modern Metallers from Sweden don’t seem too concerned with pushing the limits anymore with their music after hearing this release. Oddly enough this seems to be the biggest flaw on “Love And Other Disasters”, because their album before was too mediocre and repetitive to be memorable. Thusly, if album number three follows in those footsteps it will also be mediocre and too repetitive.
If you like the new SONIC SYNDICATE sound then this album is going to be golden to you. For me, the album feels far too repetitive to be something awesome. Every song has almost the same structures, guitar riffs, barking vocals mixed with singing vocals from the two vocalists, and pop synth keyboard lines. One song just simply mixes into the next and sans the two or three slower and more melodic tracks (which oddly just feel like slower versions of the prior songs) this album never reaches any dynamics as an album. Actually as the album ended on my computer and moved into their second album it took me 4 songs before I realized it had changed albums.
I had so much hope and expectations from this band in the beginning and it seems that they have only gone down hill. “Love And Other Disasters” feels overproduced, over-layered, repetitive, and just simply forgettable. Even their previous album had something going for it as it was so different from their first album. But this release just feels too much like a flawed carbon copy to be even as good as the previous. Hopefully, SONIC SYNDICATE will find themselves trying to push their music in the future or else I don’t know if I will be purchasing their next one.
Songs to check out: “Jack Of Diamonds”, “Fallout”, “Red Eyed Friend”.
