Girlschool - Legacy

Often cited as the female version of the mighty MOTORHEAD, GIRLSCHOOL is amazingly celebrating their thirty years as a group. That they’ve managed to stay together this long is testimony indeed, that they’ve recorded an album worthy of standing beside their early 80’s output is remarkable.

Don’t expect anything less than one hundred percent Heavy Metal saturated in an overt Punk attitude though. This is GIRLSCHOOL as you’d expect and they deliver in spades.

The opening brace of ‘’Everything’s The Same’’ and ‘’From The Other Side’’ are just prime slices of energetic riff heavy Metal a more than solid start. The first rendition of ‘’I Spy’’ showcases a feral sounding bass heavy riff with some tasty soloing, who says that an old NWOBHM group can’t be contemporary? Naturally that man Kilmister makes his perennial appearance on ‘’Don’t Talk To Me’’ backed up with the irrepressible ‘’Fast’’ Eddie Clarke. Not to be out done a couple of the kids from TWISTED SISTER, J.J. French and Eddie Ojeda add their licks and runs across the brash melodic up-beat ‘’Spend Spend Spend’’ and Don’t Mess Around’’ The ever green Neil Murray along with MOTORHEAD’S Phil Campbell make their presence known on ‘’Whole New World’’ and ‘’Legend’’ and is it audacious of the band to ask no other than Ronnie James Dio and Tony Iommi to stamp the authority over the second version of ‘’I Spy’’ It augers will for a HEAVEN AND HELL record and it’s always pleasing to hear Ronnie James give it a bit of Metal!

‘’Legacy’’ is an apt title for a band that show little signs of slowing down or, thankfully, slowing down. They might never reach the heady heights of MAIDEN/ SAXON or PREIST but GIRLSCHOOL know how to Rock and there isn’t a female Metal band out there doing it any better or any louder.
