I understand from reading Wes' review that some people are disappointed with KATATONIA's change of direction. I however am not one of these people, and no matter how much I miss the days of yore, I still thoroughly enjoy "Tonight's Decision" and "Last Fair Deal Gone Down". It was that review by Wes that convinced me to purchase this album for myself and I do not regret my decision for one minute.
Obvious comparisons with KATATONIA are found everywhere and the music can be described as the ideal filler between "Brave Murder Day" and "Discouraged Ones" but in their own right RAPTURE have added much to enhance their otherwise rip off sound, the drums are well above anything that KATATONIA ever done and the lead guitar is less repetitive and simplistic which is a good improvement on the past masters.
Vocally however RAPTURE fail to live up to KATATONIA's standard. The clean vocals are good but nowhere near as emotive, sad or impressive as those of Jonas and the growling, well let's face it who can match OPETH's Mikael Åkerfeldt?
A great release, better than "Last Fair Deal Gone Down" but falls short of all other KATATONIA releases. RAPTURE however are one to watch and could be even better with a little more originality. (Online January 29, 2003)
