Carpathian Forest - We're Going To Hell For This - Over A Decade Of Perversions
It is already over a decade ago that Hellcommander Nattefrost (vocals, guitars) gave life to CARPATHIAN FOREST. Completed by Tchort (guitar, also in GREEN CARNATION), Vrangsinn (bass) and Kobro (drums), the hellish foursome spawn yet another album in 2002, containing unreleased material, live songs and covers, all under the name of "We're Going To Hell For This - Over A Decade Of Perversions".

The album kicks off with 4 unreleased tracks, ranging from recently written ("The Angel And The Sodomizer", 2001) to much older material ("I Am Possesed", 1992). This is the perfect opportunity to see how the band has changed during the years, and it's evident that the songwriting has remained the same: High quality old school Black Metal songs, guided by the cold shrieks of Hellcommander Nattefrost. In addition, as a tribute to their own sound, covers of DISCHARGED, DARKTHRONE and VENOM have been recorded. The production on these songs is nothing short of fantastic, evil as hell yet good enough to pick out all the individual elements.

The album then continues with another unreleased track, "A Good Old Enema Treatment Part II", following up on part I, found on "Strange Old Brew", which is up to par with the previous songs. Although I heard the band has a reputation for not always being as tight on live shows, the live part of the album is more than enough to dismiss this criticism. Most of the live songs were recorded at a show in Switzerland, and span pretty much the whole career of the band. In addition there are 2 tracks from this year's Inferno Festival. In all cases the sound quality is very good for a live recording, and the band definitely gave everything to deliver a good show. In my opinion, this is a good example of how to have a good live recording! The album then is concluded by a demo version of the song "Death Triumphant" from 1996, later appearing on the album "Black Shining Leather" but even in demo version quality it should fit on every CARPATHIAN FOREST album without a problem.

Taken all together, CARPATHIAN FOREST gives an excellent overview of their career, with a nice item for the fans of the band, as well as a good starting point for people that want to explore the works of this band. "We're Going To Hell For This - Over A Decade Of Perversions" is a great album for fans of old school Black Metal! (Online December 11, 2002)
