Malignance - Regina Umbrae Mortis
Well, it's really party time for our fellow Italian Black Metaller friends. Though we've just had our asses kicked by the almighty FORGOTTEN TOMB, and the quite good BEATRIK, here comes a new outsider, MALIGNANCE. Founded on the ashes of DREAMLORD, this punchy quartet had already released a mini CD, and "Regina Umbrae Mortis" is in fact their first full-length album.

The influences and atmospheres are quite varied here, some tracks sounding quite close to old-school Norwegian Black Metal, some others sounding like a good version of EVOL, and the others being more melodic. But let's say that all in all, with MALIGNANCE, violence is the main thing! And the nice sample on "Deadhead Lodge" has to be noted too… That said, these very positive aspects are not making MALIGNANCE the best Italian band of the year, because there are still some things that have to get better. And most of all, even if the album is definitely easy to listen to, it doesn't look like it's having a long term impact.

So here's a band that's still in the second league, but in the top group. With some more work and success, it's quite possible they'll reach the first league soon! (Online April 27, 2003)
