After reading Ralf's review of WIZARD's previous album "Head Of The Deceiver", I picked it up at first opportunity and I like it a lot! True German Power Metal, with some more edge and heaviness than most of their colleagues, ridiculous and pathetic to many, but hey, I don't care as long as I like it!
Now I happen to like their style and by chance also happen to like the history of the Vikings and Norse mythology. So what a nice coincidence that WIZARD's latest "Odin" combines this Metal with a concept album about just that, could it get any better? Well, sure, I could imagine a few things, but still, when I received this disc, I was excited, hoping that these two elements were combined in the best possibly way and tadaa - they are!
From the powerful, fast opener "The Prophecy" on, WIZARD do not care for clichés, but plough ahead straight, with powerful vocals, good melodies, good riffage, basically anything a fan of the Power Metal of old could hope for, reminding me here and there a little of Hamburg's PARAGON somehow. And that is not all yet, for all haters of this very German, very traditional style of Metal will get plenty of new fodder to direct their hate against, the powerful "Betrayer", the riff monster "Dark God", "Beginning Of The End" or "March Of The Einherjers" as prime examples.
So don the leather and the spikes, take your swords (or something comparable) and raise them high into the sky, screaming "Ooooooodiiiiiiin!!!!!!" with WIZARD playing in the background. Oh, that gives me an idea, do this and send a picture of you in that pose to email@example.com! The best pics will get published on the site! (Online May 16, 2003)
