CORONER from Switzerland play the sound that in the 80s had been called "Techno Thrash" and nowadays is known as "Progressive (Thrash) Metal". And their 87 debut "R.I.P." is my fave. Before that we had the "Death Cult" demo on which nobody else than CELTIC FROST's Tom G. Warrior took over the vocals. That most probably was a returned favour as parts of CORONER had been in the tour crew of CELTIC FROST.
Back to "R.I.P.". On the CD version, released two years after the vinyl release, we get swift, very intricate noble Thrash. On the one hand the music is not as complex as their colleagues' of WATCHTOWER, MEKONG DELTA and consorts, on the other side the hammer is not swung as brutally and as fast as combos like DARK ANGEL and POSSESSED did in their best times.
The truth is somewhere between. Who likes demanding Metal that excels in some great riffs and quite some aggression and does not have to shy away from comparisons to the early works of FORBIDDEN and TESTAMENT, should not miss out on tracks like "Reborn Through Hate", the great instrumental "Nosferatu" or the hit of the album "Totentanz".
