Coven - Blessed Is The Black
American sickos COVEN have recorded an absolutely crass bludgeon with their debut "Blessed Is The Black" towards the end of the Eighties. You could categorise the music as Thrash Metal, even though the guys don't plough the Metal field like maniacs.

The songs are rather mid-tempoed, which does not mean that there are not a few outbreaks here and there still. Every now and then the songs even venture into dark Power Metal regions, as on "Out Of The Grave", which reminds me of a straighter version of the school book heavies TYRANT (U.S.). Apart from that the music roughly sounds like a mix of "Feel The Fire" (OVERKILL) and "Death And Insanity" and "Monument" of HALLOWS EVE. The hammers "6669" and "Iron Dick" with their really mad lyrics or the fat "The Monger" would have upped the last two releases a lot.

With "McDonaldsland Massacre" we then get the right mix from hefty Speed and bursting brutality in an almost Punk-like manner. Pure insanity this song: Great! "Another Life" then is a superb ballad without any pathetic elements. But also the other songs are prime examples for possessed, passionate, absolutely non-commercial Power/Speed Metal! Even though the production is quite weak, this CD results in a mile high flame inferno!!! (Online June 19, 2003)
