MANES, this is a name that should mean something to all the fans of pure true Norwegian Black Metal from the 90's, because this talented band had a feeling of their own, and are simply a cult band now, even if they haven't made so many releases. Well, here they are back, but the era of make-up, nails and spikes is over, because MANES have evolved a lot in those last years, in the same way as ULVER did. No more Black Metal! And let's say, no more Metal at all!
"Vilosophe" is way closer to pop music than to Hard Rock, and is thus quite surprising when listening to it for the first time, and even a bit boring, let's say. Still, the more you listen to it, the better you understand it and can begin to like this album, very well done and very soft, in which you can find passages of electro/pop, trip hop, etc, quite inspired. The voice is still quite special, very plaintive and almost weepy… but that's way easier to stand than the one of RADIOHEAD!
Quite a surprise then, but that's a nice try. Still, maybe a name change for the band could have been a good idea? (Online October 1, 2003)
