Savatage - Power Of The Night
Another of those albums that are role models. "Power Of The Night" is a true classic! The title song alone is the Metal hymn par excellence! Forget MANOWAR - "Raise The Fist Of The Metal Child" was/is the motto! This century riff, these divine vocals, this killer chorus! Back then still mountain king Jon Oliva sang and he was on his vocals peak! That he still was on "Hall Of The Mountain King", the glorious follow up, but more to that elsewhere.

Overall "Power Of The Night" is the perfect Metal album: everything fits here. Starting with the cliché-laden cover (fist with brass knuckles through a window), over a killer production and only hammer songs. Each for itself is a highlight like the dark "Unusual" or "Hard For Love" with its cool AOR chorus. A ballad like "In The Dream" you also do not hear often. Here vocal god Jon unleashes the beast…his inimitable high cries and the feeling for perfect melodies is just unbeatable.

The these own riffs - grandiose! I don't want to cover you with super old albums from a time, when the dinosaurs still roamed earth - but "Power Of The Night" is timeless and even today blows your speakers in a damn heavy way! That was one of the most perfect productions of the whole Eighties - no triggered drums and hundredfold double guitars and it rocks a thousand times more than all this super slick produced shit of the here and now!

So, the grandpa lays down on the couch, drinks an old fashioned beer and presses repeat for "Power Of The Night", Skol! (Online July 28, 2003)
