Is anybody up for some NWOCDM? Well, well, well, let me tell you this…if DESCEND INTO NOTHINGNESS are a sign of what's coming then watch out Sweden. This band has to be heard to be believed. Before this promo arrived, I had never heard of them and since its arrival, I have taken my time and given it many repeated listens because I simply can't believe the band is Canadian. It is not the skills that astound me, I know Canadians can excel…it is the style of music and the fact that it has been right under my Canadian nose. I am a huge fan of all things Swedish in Metal…this is every bit as good!
After all the melodic Death Metal that this world has seen, many have wondered if anything new can be done. DESCEND INTO NOTHINGNESS proves that the genre still has lots of fresh legs left. I appreciate the lyrics for their simple representation of complex issues. A few instances where they are a little awkward and clumsy, the mad, harsh vocals of Joel St.Amant more than make up for it.
Do you remember the first time you heard the magical melodies IN FLAMES worked into their Death Metal? Do you recall lately wondering where some of those melodies went? Well folks I think I found the place. Between the three axe-masters in the band, they manage to write and play some of the raunchiest riffs and most solid guitar melodies I have heard to date.
"Darkened Reality" kicks off with a shredding opener in "Humanity's Carelessness" and never lets up. Fave track, "Martyred In The Rage Of War" is a huge track that I can imagine is a crowd favourite live…what a great chorus! "Dominated By The Disease" displays a unique piano-accompanied CRADLE OF FILTH like passage that seems very original, unexpected yet very appropriate. The title track is made by its riffs, melodies and tempo changes as is often the case with so many quality Metal bands to day. The rest of the tracks do not disappoint!
I am gonna mention producer Yannick St.Amand just for the reason that his work here is excellent and I want readers to be familiar with the name as I am sure he could get a call again. I believe he was responsible for the magic of NEURAXIS this year as well. Like I have said before, Galy Records is putting out some quality shit these days…this is a perfect example. Don't forget it.
