Ralf has already reviewed the main disc, so I thought I'd take this chance to pen a few words on the re-recorded classics disc that accompanies the "Killing Ground"-limited-double-CD.
Everyone has knocked SAXON. OK, they have had their barren years and times when you just thought that they should pack up the amps and disappear. But when you listen to the eight tracks re-recorded hear then thank God they are still around!
Man, some of these tracks I haven't heard in centuries!!! All have been beefed up with a simply stunning guitar sound: crisp, heavy and down right Heavy Metal. Biff's vocals are as raspy as ever and give each re-recording new power and emphasize. SAXON, for all their faults have recorded some of Metal's mightiest anthems from the awesome "Crusader", "Dallas 1 pm" and "Denim And Leather" - just hear the guitar backing the chorus through to arguably their best known song the mighty "Wheels Of Steel" and the Donington-inspired "And The Bands Played On". Add "Motorcycle Man" and the glorious "Strong Arm Of The Law" and then you are talking about one of Britain's most enduring Metal-bands.
For years SAXON did fuck all musically. Then came along "Unleash The Beast" which was a triumphant return to form, followed by "Metalhead" and then the new belter: "Killing Ground". Still relevant in this Nu-Metal-battered world, SAXON don't sell millions, but they do deliver true Heavy Metal music with a passion and hear that would make the Metal-bands of today weep.
I reckon Barnsley Teasers are now getting the respect and attention that has been due to them after all these years in the business. Do them a favour just go and buy it!!!
