Pestilence - Testimony Of The Ancients
PESTILENCE are undisputed in their mastery of creating riffs that are somewhat "catchy" (for Death/Thrash Metal) and yet highly disturbing. This album is the one that many people, myself included, think was their pinnacle. While their previous album "Consuming Impulse" was, indeed, a Thrash-masterpiece, it didn't contain much in the way of originality in my opinion, as compared to this jewel :). "The Secrecies Of Horror" remains one of my all-time favourite Thrash-songs. This is the first album that would see guitarist Patrick Mameli switch to vocals after the departure of Martin Van Drunen, and not surprisingly, the first person his voice reminds me of is Chuck Schuldiner's (of DEATH). It is perfectly brutal yet the words are easily discernible throughout. I can just hear all the Power Metalheads going "NO! I won't believe it!". Well believe it ICED EARTH-Boy, this is the real thing...

Although there are 16 songs on "Testimony Of The Ancients", every other song is basically a short little ditty that must've been worked out in the studio (?), chaining each song together quite well to be honest! As "Darkening" segues into the colossal "Lost Souls", one cannot help but picture oneself seeing the band play this in a live setting! Very disturbing though. Then comes "Land Of Tears", a fucking brilliant Metal-classic! Just listen to the choppy riff at 0:21, with your Depends on of course, cause it's just too damn good NOT to shit thyself. This is the guitar-style PESTILENCE helped to innovate: insanely fast-picked arpeggiated riffs that twist and wrap themselves around your brain. Like I always say about this band, their music plays to their name perfectly! It literally feels like you are infected with parasites the more you listen to them, just as if you listen to enough SUFFOCATION, your cock & balls will grow to monumental proportions (a medical fact) and you will instantly be granted the ability to beat the living shit out of any nearby slack-jawed gawker...

...I digress...

If you've never heard PESTILENCE, this is where you should start for sure! In my opinion, they are one of the most overlooked and underrated bands to ever play Thrash/Death Metal. If SLAYER rocks your totem-pole, PESTILENCE might just end up cutting the damn thing down! At this day in age though, they might not sweep you off your feet like some of the newer, faster bands might, but if you want to know where all these bands learned all this great stuff, check this out...you may be plagued with the PESTILENCE, just as I have been, for years on end, which, as I like to say, is a GOOD thing....... Get infected now!
