Soulstream - Demo 2002
Death Metal from Finland, you automatically think of bands like CHILDREN OF BODOM, THRONE OF CHAOS, KALMAH… But think again, because SOULSTREAM do NOT sound like them, despite being Death Metal and using keyboards.

This sextet sounds more rooted in the traditional Death, but spicing it up with keyboard and piano passages, but still leaning towards the more traditional kinds of Metal. Front moose Ossi Paldanius' roar is predominant and marks SOULSTREAM as clear Death Metal, while ENSIFERUM guitarist Markus Toivonen, who also has joined SOULSTREAM not long ago, is adding a few clean vocals as well.

The three songs show three different sides of SOULSTREAM, while "Spoken Balance" puts a bigger emphasis on the melody, "On The Path Of The Fallen" shows us some uptempo Death Metal eruptions as well as traditional Metal riffing and "Deliverance" offers us an a bit more complex structures with a more shifting song overall, very well executed everything.

At first listen the songs might be a little bleak, nothing special, but once you give it a bit of time, the intricacies of the compositions begin to unfold and show you that SOULSTREAM is more than just Death Metal, a very hopeful newcomer from Finland (again!). (Online April 9, 2003)
