Now here's a neat little package: CRADLE OF FILTH's DVD "Heavy, Left-Handed And Candid". I have to tell you, they don't come any better than this, because what we have here is well worth the price of 20 € (well, at least that's what I paid for it).
"If you want something done properly, do it yourself" seems CRADLE OF FILTH's motto and again we're not disappointed. The DVD spans not only an entire CRADLE OF FILTH concert (see also "Live Bait For The Dead") but we get a tour documentary, two clips for "Scorched Earth Erotica" and a home-made video as well. All this glued together by Dani Filth himself, who provides introduction, outroduction and necessary commentary.
The main reason you will buy this DVD is of course the concert, but I will not discuss it again (see "Live Bait For The Dead"). It's flawless, it's exciting and it's amusing, that's all you'd want to know really. CRADLE OF FILTH plays songs from each and every album. Not even "The Principle Of Evil Made Flesh" is overlooked and the closing song "Queen Of Winter, Throned" is easily the highpoint of this gig. If you've never seen CRADLE OF FILTH live, this is what it's all about!
The documentary is kind of silly really, but if offers good insight about what's going on "behind the scenes" of a tour (nothing technical naturally). The whole thing is intercut with Alex Chandon interviewing Dani Filth and some footage of studio recording ("Bitter Suites To Succubi" I think). Any fan will find this interesting no doubt and you also get to see the band making asses out of themselves, getting drunk, chewing socks and eating large creepy insects off the ceiling.
The Blair Twit Project, as it is called, was probably more amusing to shoot for CRADLE OF FILTH than it is for us to see. They're obviously having a good time but it doesn't really go anywhere. The whole thing is shot with night vision camera down in some forest and the band just wanders around aimlessly. Combined with the videos, "Heavy, Left-Handed And Candid" really is a hilarious piece of camp in its own right. Credit to the band again for effort.
Well anyway, other than that you can still watch the Gallery, snatched straight from the "Bitter Suites To Succubi" booklet. "Heavy, Left-Handed And Candid" is typical CRADLE OF FILTH fashion: Symphonic Black Metal Opera, a bit cheesy on the side, with lots of vampires, cheap gothic horror and buckets of blood. This is all I ever wanted really from this DVD :)
A 10/10 well earned me thinks. (Online January 29, 2004)
