A sidereal hour of "Heavy Metal made in Germany" undoubtedly had been "Under Jolly Roger", the 1987 album of Hanseatic Metal kings RUNNING WILD. What had the third long player of the Hamburg based bards been panned in the big magazines! Especially "Metal Hammer" stood out there, a proud 2 out of 7 points. But the reaction of the fans was the best answer, who bought the album in masses.
Mostly the band was mocked because of their pirate image and the fitting costumes. So what? Finally an original and 100% fitting Metal outfit, because aren't we all privateers somehow? And the music on "Under Jolly Roger" is great from A to Z!!! Maybe they do not have the big hymns such as "Diabolic Force", "Prisoner Of Our Time", "Mordor" or "Chains And Leather", maybe the very big melodies of the debut are missing… No, the melodies are there, not as to the fore, but still there.
E.V.E.R.Y. fan of German Metal knows the title song, for instance! And the other seven songs also ignite after a short time already. It doesn't come surprising that RUNNING WILD have influenced cohorts of Metallers (among others DRAKKAR, IRON SWORD, MORNINGSTAR etc.). Together with "Gates To Purgatory" "Under Jolly Roger" is essential for each fan of German Metal. (Online January 31, 2004)
