VICIOUS CIRCLE is a German band, playing melodic Black Metal. This sextet, also containing a girl, released their second album "A Diary Of Deathtiny" in early December 2003. By the way, this is not a concept album. As little appetizer, I received the maxi CD respectively single "This Forest's Dark Heart".
Like I said before, the music of VICIOUS CIRCLE is mostly melodic Black Metal, whereby the band claims, that they don't want to fix themselves on a style and that they also integrate other Heavy Metal elements. This maxi CD contains the title track "This Forest's Dark Heart" in two versions, the song "Atrocity In Excellence" as well as the video clip of the song "Night Child". Furthermore, there is the band history, a photo gallery and wallpapers for the PC. The three songs are altogether good and varied. The sound is in terms of a Black Metal production well-done and also the video is pretty appealing. A little problem, I have with VICIOUS CIRCLE, is the female singing. It's not that I think that female vocals have not to be on a Black Metal record, it's rather that I think that they don't really fit in the overall sound of VICIOUS CIRCLE. Maybe I don't like the voice of Christina SchrŲder, maybe I have problems with the mixing. Some will surely think in another way, but in my point of view, I can't deal with the female vocals here. Otherwise I can't criticize much on this. VICIOUS CIRCLE play appealing music and I think that the album will find some friends. The concept seems to be pretty appealing but I don't want to say too much about it. It's your task to find it out.
Those who don't dare to buy the whole album instantly, can firstly check them out on "This Forest's Dark Heart". Fans of Black sounds a la DIMMU BORGIR or CRADLE OF FILTH will also take pleasure with VICIOUS CIRCLE. But also others, who like melody and variety should check out the band. Black Metal purists a la DARKTHRONE or MAYHEM may be warned. So, I am interested in the album and hope to find it in a record store to check it out. The maxi is rated with 7 points. If the album is also in this style and contains even better songs, then they can expect a higher rating. (Online February 8, 2004)
