Man, man, the music that this quintet is creating can only be described as big, because I doubt that you can measure this with normal standards anymore.
Just take a look at the "statistics" of this albums: For months of recording. The Don Kossaken-choir. Helmstedt-chamberchoir. A 14-head choir. Bassoon. Lyra. Viola. Five violins. Three violas. One each cello, bass and cembalo.
After the, as usual, epic intro "Epicus Furor", RHAPSODY start out with "Emerald Sword", which some might already know from the eponymous single, in fashion: fast Power Metal of epic proportions, tons of bombast, classical instruments, huge choirs and Fabio Lione's characteristic voice, just everything that we have come to know and love of RHAPSODY. The following "Wisdom Of The Kings" hits the same alley, just that at times the strings (the classical ones) take over and bring in a much more classical colouring.
With cembalo and flute "Heroes Of The Lost Valley" conjures an almost baroque atmosphere, followed by an absolute classic, the title-track of the legendary demo: "Eternal Glory". Re-recorded, a bombastic masterpiece of Power Metal, with lots of classical elements, but equally heavy as melodious, plus these choirs, for sure one of the best tracks that Luca Turilli ever has conceived!
"Beyond The Gates Of Infinity" then has a hard time to live up to such a killer, but still the song bears all RHAPSODY-trademarks, another good one... After the good ballad "Wings Of Destiny" "The Dark Tower Of Abyss" gets a lot more classical, with a lot of strings and cembalo, a big choir and these grand melody-lines, great :)
After that we get furious, fast "Riding The Winds Of Eternity" and the end is brought up by the title-track, more than 13 minutes long, varied without end, from purely classical to double-bass-driven Power Metal, classical instruments to heavy e-guitars, great choirs galore, this is the ultimate Power Metal-version of THERION! You just have to have heard this song to believe!
For some it is too much, but packed into a powerful Paeth-production this most probably is the ultimate album in the genre of bombastic/epic Power Metal, because what we get here is simply huge, as well from the resources as he result!
Who can only slightly identify with this style and does not own this album cannot be really called a fan!
