A DISMEMBER album is an event in itself, all the more that “Where Ironcrosses Grow” has been quite long to reach the stores. Maybe the passage from Nuclear Blast to Karmageddon Media added some delay, but “Hate Campaign” was released such a long time ago that I was even asking myself if DISMEMBER still existed or not. The answer is yes and the new question is now to know if they still kick some ass. There again, the answer is yes, but only partially.
With a huge guitar sound and the still very virile voice of Matti Kärki, DISMEMBER keep on sending huge bombs in your face and playing old-school Swedish Death Metal… but they have put quite a lot of water in their wine and there a some, maybe even too much, melodies. I would exaggerate here by saying that some tracks sound like some kind of violent DARK TRANQUILLITY, but hey, the typical IRON MAIDEN passage on “Tragedy Of The Faithful” is quite weird for DISMEMBER, though quite well done.
Anyway, we’ll just say that it’s a logical evolution of the band after all those years, but I’m not sure that it’s going the right way… (Online March 21, 2004)
