Finntroll - Trollhammaran EP

EP’s are a bitch aren’t they? You love em and you hate em. Finally you get to hear something new from your favourite band only to be left in excitement wanting the full-length more and more each time you listen to the new songs but failing in doing so because the final album won’t be out for another month.

The band in question here is Finland’s FINNTROLL who are about to release their fourth full-length album in April. Before the album arrives on the shelves they put out this EP called “Trollhammaran” which mostly contains non-album material. The title track comes off the upcoming album. This track alone makes me impatient and shaky for the album; judging solely by this song the future sound of FINNTROLL will go into a more epic approach with a whole lotta folk melodies, Gsus Christ, how can Black Metal be so catchy, irresistibly merry and evil at the same time, in short: one helluva song!!!

The other four tracks are pretty good as well but exclusively used for this release, including the very heavy edit of “Forsvinn Du Som Lyser” which originally appeared in an acoustical form on “Visor Om Slutet”.

“Visor Om Slutet” was the first recording the band made with Wilska (SETHIAN and guest appearances in NIGHTWISH), which wasn’t really in need of any brutal vocals. On “Trollhammaran” he makes his Black Metal vocal debut in a cool trollish kind of way; I can just see him doing his wardance after devouring his prey on the icy plains, looks like he’s the right man (troll) for the job he he.

“Trollhammaran” is sure to provide good company until “Nattfödd” comes out. Better start saving money, you know what you’re gonna need for your next journey with the trolls: lots of beer crates!!! (Online April 4, 2004)
