After the debut already had found some acclaim and brought me some nice listening-sessions, the Swedes offer us their second album with "Straight Ahead" and continue exactly where they had left off with their eponymous first album. Only in very rare moments SOUTHFORK sound Swedish and this although none other than Tomas Skogsberg (ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER, GRAVE, NECROPHOBIC, ...) in the old-venerable Sunlight Studio widdled the knobs, getting the boys an almost American sound.
The bone-dry Stoner Rock, enriched with psychedelic parts, works from the first track on and after a few rotations only a certain addictiveness of "Straight Ahead" cannot be denied. The earthy and powerful compositions leave a lasting impression and SOUTHFORK should soon be named in the same sentence as genre-greats as KYUSS (R.I.P.), MONSTER MAGNET (in "Dopes To Infinity"- or "Superjudge"-times), NEBULA, FU MACNHU or UNIDA.
Over everything, of course, thrones the inevitable flair of old BLACK SABBATH-glory, which once more proves to us how timeless and immortal this band has been and still is. Exactly here the Swedes show a big strength, leaving out any intentions of following a currently hip trend. Timeless and fresh this band crawls through the Rock-desert, baffling us with mighty grooves and lengthy guitar-solos.
The vocals of Gunnar Lööf, who also wrote all songs for this album, match every mood of the songs and make SOUTHFORK further stand out from the competition.
You don't always have to look across the Atlantic to get a good portion of Rock, when the folks of SOUTHFORK wait right around the corner to smack you in the head. Who listens to the already-mentioned or related bands should make an appointment with the Sweden-rockers and get a prescription for "Straight Ahead". The desert lives, also in Scandinavia!
