Demonoid - Riders Of The Apocalypse

Oh my god, fuck... yes... yes!!! No, I’m not jerking off, I just listened to DEMONOID yet again!!! A lot of talk has been going around about this THERION/CHIMAIRA side project ever since it was announced. THERION guys going Death Metal, a concept album about the biblical Riders of the Apocalypse, how can this go wrong? And then reviews started to come in, all the album could score was either 100/100 or 10/10, so I just had to check it out.

“Riders Of The Apocalypse” is the cure for every Metal head that’s been waiting for a crushing, deadly and genre-extending Death Metal album. Yes, my friends, this is THE album you’ve been longing for not matter if you’re an old school fan or just got into the genre, it is sure to please both parts!

The style is Death Metal but there’s so much more to it. Keyboards supply with some atmospheric backdrops, the rest is taken care by the band member’s excellent song writing and forward thinking methods of using their instruments and a good dose of spherical guitar sounds! Everyone, including Christofer who screams and growls like a ill-tempered imp walking through the nine plains of Hell, plays with extreme precision, I don’t know what they’re on but it definitely works!

“Wargods” opens the album with a blasting through all the features in Death Metal music; supernatural technicality, thrashy speed rhythms, hidden details, stunning solos (with new sets of standards for wackiness, Kristian Niemann is officially my new guitar hero!!!), guttural growls and small experimentation. There’s so much to hear on this single song clocking at almost six minutes, I’ll never touch an instrument again or even try to write a piece of music!

No rest for the wicked! “Firestorms” literally storms through ultra heavy verses and a fast Black Metal chorus with extreme melodic guitar tapping and... before you know it you’re at the third track, what a rush!!! Slower tracks like “14th Century Plague” and especially “The Evocation” work very well with the story. The last mentioned song has some despairing female vocals while Christofer himself acts as the Riders; this is the album’s unique moment as the band paints the scenery before you, I love it when those lead guitars in “Arrival Of The Horsemen” (sick groove by the way) announce the coming of the Riders, a lovely sight it is (no, I’m not writing under the influence of drugs!)

The album finishes with “Death”, a nine minute Progressive Death Metal gem that constantly changes, every member gets the chance to prove their skills, but they already did that like eight times before this song hehe.

I don’t about you but if nothing better comes along, “Riders Of The Apocalypse” will be my “Death Metal Album des Jahres”!!! Get your hands on this album, now is not the time to be critical about reviews, it’s all true, buy this and get the best seats to witness the fall of mankind!!! (Online September 9, 2004)
