Sodom - Persecution Mania

It has been a long time since the small (and back then still slim) Hawk got into contact with the Thrash-thunderstorm of SODOM for the first time. Heard the song “Nuclear Winter” on the radio and quickly ordered the “Persecution Mania” CD as well as a MOTÖRHEAD shirt via the next mail order. Well, the shirt has disappeared a long time ago, but SODOM still have a loyal fan.

„Persecution Mania“ was the final departure from the chaotic (but neat) thrashing of the early days and the satanic image was put away, too. Not that the Ruhrpott-Thrashers have wimped out, not at all, mighty blasting still reigns on the CD. Only showcased better by producer John Harris who nailed a damn MOTÖRHEAD-like sound onto the tape together with the band. Talking about MOTÖRHEAD: With “Iron Fist”, SODOM laid down one of the countless classics of their faves, damn neatly, that is.

Nevertheless the own compsotitions didn’t have to fear comparison with it, on the contrary. The gang around Tom Angelripper lighted fireworks after fireworks. With “Bombenhagel”, there is even one of the biggest band anthems on the disc. As the band inserted the German national anthem guitar-wise into this song, they were called nazis by some lunatics, although a quick glance at the lyrics would have been enough to show what is the case.

Be it as it is, the album should be part of any Thrash Metal collection, the more so since the CD also contains the “Expurse Of Sodomy” EP as well as a remake of the oldie “Outbreak Of Evil”. And really every song is Thrash Metal by the book! (Online October 12, 2004)
