Scream Silence - Curious Changes

Before I review the full-length album, I’m going to take a look at this single, see if I’ve got anything good coming up.

Judging only by the contents of this single, SCREAM SILENCE hail from Berlin and play Gothic Rock in a simplistic way that’s effective and heartbreaking. “Curious Changes”, which is the single in question, appears in three formats: a single version, a modern trance/wave rendition plus a video edition.

The single version is catchy and radio friendly to some extent but very sad, very German sounding, it works better than the “serenade remix” that follows. The video is gothic and not much else; four guys, all dressed in black with the looks of anguish pretending to be lonely and sad for some reason.

Left alone is the title track from their new album. This is not the finished version, but a recording before the band hit the studio. I like it the music, reminds me of ANATHEMA’s “Alternative 4” album, plenty of acoustic guitars and violins, but the vocals in the chorus sound uncontrolled.

So with this single out of the way, I must confess that I’m excited about the album, I feel this could be something with emotional depth and chilled atmospheres, something along the lines of FLOWING TEARS seductive music. (Online November 18, 2004)
