Despair - History Of Hate

The Thrash Metal band has been the first musical home for the now star producer and GRIP INC. member Waldemar Sorychta. And their (DESPAIR, not GRIP INC.) singer Robert Kampf now is known (and also feared) as label boss of Century Media. So much for the most famous former members.

Musically the combo brought us extremely stressful Techno-Thrash (was the style back then, today it is called „Progressive“) on their debut “History Of Hate”. Well, the band did not make it easy to like their music and still, 16 years later, it still opens up questions. Not that the CD was confused and disjointed from beginning to end, but the sheer amount of breaks and tempo changes is hard to take in.

For musicians the whole thing definitely is a feast, but the standard fan will just shake his head (and I do not mean banging). When DESPAIR set out straight though, as on the anti Nazi song “Slaves Of Power” or deliver the dark-dramatic instrumental “The Enigma”, it automatically results in enthusiasm. Not to forget the song “Joy Division”, where they have the almost perfect balance between demand and straight thrashing.

Apart from that you need a lot to really like this style. Most probably people, who can live with a complex version of ASSASSIN, will be most compatible to the CD. And just to the side: To find the CD version is just as hard as to see our boss Alex wet his mouth alcoholically. (Online 3. Dezember 2004)
