Who knows the first two releases "A Red Wintersunset" and "Songs Of Misty Moors And Fields", might be a little surprised when listening to the new EMPYRIUM-album with the handy title of "Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays", because there is not much reminiscent of those albums' Romantic Black Metal, rather ULVER's "Kveldssanger"-album comes to your mind more than once.
Already the opening title-track leads the way: acoustic guitar accompanied by flute and percussion, then add a clean deep male voice and you have a very simple, but still fascinating sound. The rest of the songs also features folky compositions without any electric support or similar add-ons, sometimes instrumental ("Dying Brokenhearted"), sometimes with female vocals in addition ("The Shepherd And The Maiden Ghost") or a nearly minstrel-like voice ("Many Moons Ago..."). EMPYRIUM have created an extraordinary album (in more ways than one), which is welcomingly different.
