Ajattara - Tyhjyys

With the way things have been going on in the Finnish market, I was expecting more melodic Black Metal. What I wake up call I got. Not only are all the songs done in their native tongue, but musically this is cold, heartless and dark as hell. You won't get any blistering beats or over sensationalistic riffs from this three piece, but what you are given is something evil and guaranteed to blacken your soul in an instant.

"Tyhjyydesta" is pretty much mid paced with haunting and grueling riffs teamed up with some slow paced drumming and completed with sinister vocals that would probably have 'The King' KING DIAMOND grinning from ear to ear. "Pahan Tuoma" has a bit more pep in its composition, but the eerie synths sort of steal the show here. What I didn't expect was for "Sortajan Kaipuu" to be catchy with its grooving bass lines and sweet riffs. Even some clean vocals make a special appearance here.

Hey look! If you think you are looking for the next DIMMU record, then you better just wait for it because you won't find any traces of it here. This record has the Norwegian Black Metal vibe of the early 90's and if that's your thing then you have found the right record. (Online February 22, 2005)
