SkinKrawl - Demo

Before anyone complains that how I’m a purist and claims that I gave this album a low grade simply because I labelled it as Nu-Metal release, please, hear me out. This a could have been a cool demo that could have showcased a band releasing something strong, yet the repetitiveness and the lack of direction in the riffing and the lack of decent vocals drag this down from “good” to “unlistenable”.

The music shows promise in certain cases, with the guitars doing very creative and catchy riffing (Chorus of “Eternity Purified”), or a melodic interlude that will stick in your brain (section that starts at 3:50 in “Emotional Suspended Animation”). Unfortunately other times it just seems to be satisfied with playing predictable off-beats and power chord patterns over and over.

The vocals are either screamed or sung, but whenever the vocals are of the harsh type, they get monotonous and very tiring after a while and when sung clean, the singer is out of key and it’s very apparent. Furthermore, he can’t carry a tune, which drags down the vocals even more.

To be fair, there are certain moments on the CD that show a lot of promise, however, they are rare and far in between, so it’s not much to be excited about. (Online March 29, 2005)
