Wacken Open Air, the place every Metal head wants to be a part of. I’ve often thought about going there but due to various reasons I haven’t, the hopes are still high though. I simply must go there, just look at some of the confirmed acts for this summer, the fifteenth instalment in total: NIGHTWISH, ENSIFERUM, TRISTANIA, NAGLFAR, HAMMERFALL, ACCEPT and reunited Death Metal couplet OBITUARY and GOREFEST, sweaty!!! Erm… let me rephrase: I simply “need” to go there so that I may stand in awe with clenched fists among fellow Metal hearts and sing along with the undying chorus lines and get all crazed out when the tempos go into overdrive.
As a pre taster of the atmosphere on this very special festival, I now sit with this compilation of last year’s package, which included prestigious names like NEVERMORE, CHILDREN OF BODOM, ANTHRAX and KOTIPELTO sharing stages with wise elders such as MOTÖRHEAD, DIO, MAYHEM, DEATH ANGEL, DORO and CANNIBAL CORPSE, like I said, I need to be there soon! The tracks selected to appear are of course hits of the individual band; “Enemies Of Reality”, “Holy Diver”, “Indians”, “We Are Motörhead”, “Fear Of The Dark”, how could these classics ever let a turned on crowd down right? ELÄKELAISET (a relatively unknown non serious band out of Finlandia) have their go at VAN HALEN’s “Jump”, humppa style, that’s right, would be worth going just to see that, sounds hilarious! The sound changes from band to band, it all depends on the genre, the live energy is definitely there that’s for sure.
Most of the bands play their songs convincingly and connect with the thousands of hungry attendants, some don’t, (*coughs* BAL SAGOTH *coughs*). I don’t want to be picking at Mr. Laiho’s guitar scaling nor questioning his talent, I remember seeing C.O.B. at Sweden Rock last year and leaving them behind halfway through the show, why, because they couldn’t deliver, the front man sure can play but he kinda forgets that alcohol does damage to your brain cells thus lowering your accuracy when playing.
You can’t give any juicy details when you haven’t really been there but on paper and on CD for that matter, this fiery festival seems well worth a visit, I hope my turn is soon to come, can’t wait!!! (Online May 13, 2005)
