Devanic - Mask Installed

DEVANIC hail from Vienna and present us with some sort of Melodic Death Metal light on their debut “Mask Installed“. Why light? Because on the one hand they lack the murderous brutality of ARCH ENEMY on the other hand also the raw, wild and reckless abandon. All of which attributes that I need in a good Melo Death attack. At least the band doesn’t sound like the completely overrated IN FLAMES or CHILDREN OF BODOM, at least something, isn’t it?

DEVANIC try their best to keep their songs varied, on “You Will See”, for example, they implement some acoustic elements, but they lack in the melody department. At times it seems as if they had not fully developed the melodic elements. Even though…with every sip of double schnapps-ice tea the whole thing sounds better and better. In terms of guitar arrangements and melodies the Austrians definitely are on the winners’ side and from the fifth song “The Empire Of Light” on the album really kicks arse… But not to get lost in the masses they will have to do more in the future. With “Ignorance”, they have at least one pure, slightly thrashy cracker in line. On with this! (Online June 5, 2005)
