MY DYING BRIDE is known for their line of quality-releases over the course of their career. The album "34,788 % Complete" was accepted with very mixed feelings though, apparently being one of those albums that you either love or hate. But with "The Light At The End Of The World" MY DYING BRIDE once again shows who rules Doom Metal…
Unlike the "34,788 % Complete"-album, which was kinda far off the usual MY DYING BRIDE-style, "The Light At The End Of The World" sees the band going back to their roots. The violins that were used on some previous records are completely gone, and much to my joy, vocalist Aaron brings back the grunts to accompany his normal clean vocals. In my opinion this is almost essential, since Doom Metal is so dependent on mood swings in the music and what can express these mood swings better than alternating vocal styles!!! The whole structure of the songs is also a lot better than it was on previous albums, probably a result from the years of experience that the band now has under it's belt.
Right from the start this album grabs you and doesn't let you go. The opening track "She Is The Dark" is without a doubt one of the finest songs by MY DYING BRIDE, being a definition of the rejuvenation of the old style, with the presence of aggressive and atmospheric guitar riffs, grunts and clean vocals… But this is not the only highlight on the album, songs like "The Light At The End Of The World", "Edenbeast", "The Fever Sea" and "Into The Lake Of Ghosts" are just some of the great songs on this record.
In most cases, when a band drifts away from the style they played in the beginning of the careers, they never return… But this record shows how remarkable a band MY DYING BRIDE is. They do not only return to old form, but also release their best record to date, which can only be topped by an even better new record.
