Italy seem to have a knack for producing Gothic Metal bands with both male and female vocals and guess what? They’ve done it again with LIFEND. While listening to the album for the first time, I read various reviews from other sites, to get different opinions on the album all together. One of the reviews opening statements immediately grabbed my attention:
”It is hard to hail from Italy, specifically from Milan, have both female and harsh male vocalists, practice heavy guitar playing and NOT be compared to LACUNA COIL.”
This definitely holds true. Especially with the huge amount of attention “Comalies” received from both radio stations and music television channels around the world. I will say that while there are many similarities between these two bands, there are also various differences.
The use of the saxophone was the first of these differences to catch my immediate attention. Most people think of jazzier elements when they hear the word “saxophone”, however, with LIFEND this does not seem to be the case. Hearing this definitely took me by surprise. Secondly, the acoustic guitar passages on this album were more than intriguing and at times reminded me of something that I would find present on an OPETH album.
The album actually starts off with a bit of a techno-ish beat, but for those of you who despise Techno, don’t press that stop button right away. Things do pick up and get better. One thing I noticed, this band loves to put trippy synth passages in weird places. All that does is make the album more interesting in my opinion.
The vocal passages on the album, while not anything particularly mind-blowing, are done well. I will say that I enjoyed the heavier male vocals more than I did the more soothing sounds of Sara, but hey that’s just me.
All in all this is a pretty good album. I wouldn’t really be in any big rush to go out and pick it up, but it’s still something that once bought, you won’t be ashamed to have it in your collection. (Online July 7, 2005)
