After WITHIN TEMPTATION and AFTER FOREVER, here comes PENUMBRA. All of them use Metal-guitars, all of them like classical music, and all of them have got a cute female singer. But, first difference, the last ones I quoted are French, tough the other two are Dutch. Second difference, where AFTER FOREVER and WITHIN TEMPTATION only use keyboards for their classical background, PENUMBRA uses a real orchestra. And that sounds good, all the more that the Sound Suite Studios' sound is perfectly adapted to that style.
But, third difference, PENUMBRA have made some bad taste choices, such as, for example, the drum playing sounding like a bad drum-machine. And fourth big, or should I even say huge mistake, is that PENUMBRA haven't reached the level of their aforementioned friends yet. Far from that. Their songs are created with good intentions, but don't have enough unity and quickly create an un-understandable album that won't leave any traces on you, except maybe a strong nervous feeling, caused by the incredibly pompous and pretentious gothic elements that you'll find everywhere.
So ok, misses and misters from PENUMBRA, now you have to make a choice between Gothic Metal and classical music, because if you had the idea to do something like that again, I wouldn't forgive you. Not at all.
