Torch - Torch Aka Warlock

I couldn’t believe it when I heard that Weinsheimer & Co. managed it to engage the legendary TORCH for their “Keep It True”-festival… There was nothing to read or hear from them for at least 20 years. I was a bit sceptical when I heard that only singer Dan Dark is still in the band as original band member. Well, the festival is over now and TORCH have been a killer! It was a very energetic performance and all die-hard fans got the chance to listen to all their hits. They received very good reactions, although it reminded me a bit of Udo Dirkschneider in terms of singing/optic… A good reason to review the best album of TORCH, simply “Torch” entitled. By the way, in Germany it was released under the title “Warlock” but this is identical with “Torch” (Oversea/Scandinavia).

TORCH released their first full-length album after the sensational, culty “Fireraiser”-EP and this band belonged to the hardest bands. No joke, that grand voice of Dark and their “super heavy songs” were really hard at that time! Today, this is seen “only” as normal Heavy or Power Metal and that really fits to the ten songs: they have POWER. The album is today as great as in the past, songs like “Beauty & The Beast” or “Watcher Of The Night” are timeless masterpieces. “Rage Age”, the speedy “Hatchet Man”, “Sweet Desire” or “Warlock” are a must-have for every traditional headbanger! Everything is perfect, from songwriting, vocals, instruments to production – and the cover artwork is totally culty! And then there are killer choruses, great breaks and one of the best vocalists in Heavy Metal history – this man has one of the most passionate voices, I’ve ever heard… Fans of ACCEPT, PRIEST and MAIDEN will have their pleasure with TORCH.

The biggest problem is to get this record on CD, it’s rare and expensive… As far as I know, Olli Klemm and his High Vaultage label try to do a re-release with bonus tracks… We will count the days… (Online August 14, 2005)
