I would ask the Metal community for another small minute of remembrance for another passed-away warrior of true steel… I am talking about Barry Stern, former drummer of TROUBLE ("Trouble" + "Manic Frustration"), and drummer and singer of ZOETROPE. The man died on April 1, 2005 after a difficult hip operation, at the age of only 45 years. R.I.P. Barry!!!
For all, who do not know Barry’s creations yet, I recommend ZOETROPE’s 87 album "A Life Of Crime". The band itself titled its style "Hardcore Street Metal" and even though you can heavily debate the term “Hardcore”, it still was a fitting description. But don’t expect any filigree rhythms, thousands of breaks and sky soaring melodies, if you need it simple, raw and with full force, then you will find what you want with this. The album fits very well into your collection, next to bands such as MURO, BLOOD MONEY or EXCITER.
Sure, the songs are not really spectacular, but damn intense and honest. As check out tips I would name the smasher "Seeking Asylum" with superb solos, a bit like JUDAS PRIEST’s "Ram It Down". But also the blazing, super catchy opener "Detention" deserves a listen. All in all not a must, but a higher can have. (Online August 20, 2005)
