Mighty Nimbus, The - s/t

Isn’t this just one of the best band names ever? THE MIGHTY NIMBUS is one of those Stoner Metal/Rock band names that really make no sense (ALABAMA THUNDERPUSSY, KARMA TO BURN) but just sound cool and are pretty catchy.

As with all Stoner Metal, THE MIGHTY NIMBUS plays slow, heavy, power chord based melodies with down-tuned guitars. The melodies are very groovy and Blues-based, that are reminiscent of CROWBAR and BLACK SABBATH and because the guitar sound has this sludgy and (a little) muddy tone, it accents on the sludgy/doomy element within the riffs. The whole thing just goes by at a relatively slow pace, just crushing everything in its path and does so by still having this very Bluesy attack and Hard Rock feel to it. The vocals are sometimes of the semi-clean/semi screamed variety, or sometimes of the distorted clean variety. Considering that the guitars are also muddy, it works in tandem with the music and gives off this wall of sound that is both pleasing to hear and as massive as a mountain. There is also a brief interlude (“Fenrir”) and it fits quite nicely right in the middle of the album, serving as a break in between the onslaught.

This is quite the rocking album. (Online November 4, 2005)
