Widow - On Fire

What the American group WIDOW presents on its second album is quite daring. In principle, their traditional Metal is in the eighties style, with nice MAIDEN leads and typical riffs and a true Metal queen behind the microphone. But why the hell (male) growls and shrieky vocals are used here is beyond me…Otherwise the whole thing reminds me of bands like SINERGY or also HELLION, if it wasn’t for the growls.

With purists, the whole thing will probably face rejection. That said, I must admit that the combination actually works quite well and gives the pure Metal songs a modern touch. Moreover, the song material just is too first-class. My favourite is: “Re-Animate Her” with its irresistible killer riff! Or the amazing opening duo “An American Werewolf In Raleigh” and “The Preacher’s Daughter” with great guitar harmonies and good hooks. Sadly I have heard vocalist Lili is not with them anymore… (Online February 3, 2006)
