Haggard - Awaking The Gods (Live In Mexico) (DVD)

As I had already written in my review of “Awaking The Gods“, it isn't awaiting you as an authentic live album in any way but a best of with audience and announcements of the band. However, the DVD has a good reason for the right to exist – the picture!

Anyway, it's one thing to hear the studio versions with fan sounds. It's a completely different one if you even can see the band and fans and can imagine how it should have been sounding if the recordings at the Teatro Ferrocarriero in Mexico City had been done well. Primary this has been the reason why the record label chose the studio versions!

But enough of the criticism. Let's have a look at the enjoyable part of this DVD namely the picture that is absolutely okay and flickers on the screen very clearly. The camera work is very good, too, and the cut isn't too fast-paced. So you can see alternately the musicians and fans, occasionally shoots of the landscape and some local sights respectively. For the sound you can choose between PCM Stereo and AC3 Dolby Digital. The menu is very simple and you only can pick each of the 12 songs and decide the sound. Unfortunately bonuses have been set aside completely.

I still advise everybody against buying the CD. Better fetch the 2 CD limited edition of “Eppur Si Muove“ including the DVD from the Wacken performance in 1998 – that is 100% live! I can give a constricted buy recommendation because here you finally can see how this ingenious band manages to balance and bring 16 musicians and instruments on stage. This is only beaten by going to a HAGGARD concert! (Online February 24, 2006)
