I know I shouldn’t judge an album by the song titles, but let’s face it, “Lactose Intolerance”, “Caffeine Induced Insomnia” and my personal favourite, “Fluffy Little Teddybears”, seem to suggest that CARNAL LEFTOVERS might have quite a relaxed attitude to the Death Metal scene. Yes, I know it’s tongue-in-cheek, but still. Needless to say then, having been aurally obliterated recently upon attending a CRYPTOPSY and ABORTED gig, I’m feeling rather sceptical of “just another Death Metal band”.
Overall there’s nothing really wrong with “Pressure Pleasure” – it delivers everything you’d expect after looking at the front cover (sorry for making an opinion abruptly, but in this world of so many bands you have to be able to size up albums quickly), but I’m finding myself listening to this EP another time so as to identify any particular merit. There are some decent riffs, but the trouble is, all bands have decent riffs, the drums are pretty solid and in some places the production reminds me of the dirtiness of BLOODBATH which is definitely a good thing. The vocals, however, are probably the least impressive aspect for me. Sometimes the gutturals are reached, but I’m not so keen on the addition of the screams, I think for screams to be used effectively, it’s really got to be some sort of Black Metal, or a rare exception (suddenly Lord Worm of CRYPTOPSY comes back into my mind).
Having said all that though, CARNAL LEFTOVERS are trying to make Death Metal a bit less morbid, it’s just I’m still not sure whether this is a good or bad thing, after all it is Death Metal. So unless you’re a personal friend of the band or simply a diehard fan there would be little point in looking especially hard for “Pressure Pleasure”, as there are just so many better acts in the genre out there.
